Learner's Exam (Knowledge Test)

Class 7 Learner’s Licence Information

  • No Appointment Needed: The process operates on a first-come, first-served basis. However, you can book a specific time by calling 403-946-0261.
  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 14 years old. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must accompany you with identification to sign a Parental Consent Form (available at the office).
  • Knowledge Test Language: The Class 7 knowledge test is offered in multiple languages. Contact the office to check availability for your language.
  • Identification Requirements: Bring at least two valid pieces of ID, such as:
    • Birth Certificate
    • Health Care Card
    • Passport
    • Plus, a piece of mail showing your address or your parent’s information (if you are a minor).
  • Test Retake Policy: If you fail the knowledge test, you can retake it the next day. Note that you must pay the fee for each attempt.
  • Vision Test: After passing the knowledge test, you will take a vision test, which you must also pass.
  • Issuance of Licence: Once you pass both tests, you can receive your Class 7 Operator’s licence, which is valid for 5 years. Check the current registration fees for applicable costs.

Driver's Exam (Road Test)

Eligibility for the Road Test

  • You must be 16 years of age or older.
  • You need a valid Class 7 licence.
  • All Graduated Driver’s licence requirements must be met, if applicable.

Road Test Details

  • The examiner is a licensed officer authorized to conduct road tests in Alberta.
  • A brief vehicle inspection will occur to ensure that:
    • Brake lights
    • Signal lights
    • Door latches are functioning properly.
  • No passengers or pets are allowed during the road test.

Duration

  • The basic road test usually lasts about 45 minutes.

Retaking the Test

  • If you do not pass, you can retake the test as soon as the next day.
  • You will need to purchase a new Road Test Permit for each attempt.

After Passing the Test

  • Upon passing, your Class 7 Operator’s licence will be reclassified as a Class 5.
  • This change takes only a few minutes after your return from the road test.
  • Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during this process.
